WHISPERING WOOD SCULPTURES

Hand carved from Western Australian Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) renowned for its versatility, its durability and strength and rich array of deep reds golds and browns.
Mounted on steel anchor chain recycled from the wharfs at Fremantle Port in Western Australia.
Nature hewn surface hand carved with highly smoothed and sensual polished finishes.
The wood itself is hundreds of years old, grown in the ancient endemic Jarrah forests and found in its naturally seasoned state on the forest floor.
Aglaope was the name of one of the original sirens from Homer's Odyssey. It is translated as "with lambent voice". According to myth, the sirens were fated to die if someone heard their song and survived. This rendering in Jarrah which grows on the ancient dune system of the Western Australian Landscape is a poignant figuration of the lure that the vast and giant timber reserves held for the early explorers and settlers. Attempting to conquer, tame and industrialise the vast, remote and harsh lands is wreaked with tragic histories. The anchor chain symbolises the connection to the ocean and the remains of the wrecked and long gone ships that brought the settlers to colonise the land. The song of the Jarrah lives on.
